Self awareness and emotional intelligence has been more recently emphasised as critical ingredients for success, and I agree. You need to have a good understanding of who you are in order to build a business that you are passionate about and will love to be part of. If you do not love what you do and you are not passionate about what you do you will not be able to succeed. The best brands are those that carry a genuine and authentic message. In order to be able to have a genuine and authentic brand you need to know who you are , because your brand is an extension of yourself.
So now the question warrants itself, who are you? There are different ways to assess who you are, for the purpose of this article I am going to stick with the Tony Robbins philosophy. There are six core needs that need to be met , these needs are listed and explained below:
- Certainty – the need for safety , stability , security , comfort , order , predictability , control and consistency
- Uncertainty or variety – the need for variety , surprise , challenges, excitement , difference , chaos , adventure , change and novelty
- Significance – the need to have meaning , special , pride , needed , wanted , sense of importance and worth of love
- Love and connection – the need for communication , unified, approval and attachment to feel connected with, intimate and loved by, other human beings
- Growth – the need for constant emotional, intellectual and spiritual development
- Contribution – the need to give beyond ourselves, give, care , protect and serve others

These are regarded as the six core human needs. You need all of them to have feeling purpose and meaning. What distinguishes people is how the prioritise these needs. So lets say for example, a person prioritises uncertainty and thrives on adventure, they undoubtedly going to make different life choices to the person who prioritises certainty. Each person weighs each of the six core human needs differently, as people are wired differently. This is the one thing that as people we need to accept, we are all wired differently and therefore people will behave differently based on which human need(s) they value the most. That said we need to feed all six components in our life. Even someone who loves certainty needs elements of uncertainty in their life.
This outlook on life really helped me become more self aware and realise what I prioritise the most, for me its contributing and growing. If I am not contributing and growing, am done , I throw in the towel, I loose interest and start to look for the nearest exit. I cannot compel myself to be removed from contributing and growing This is very much who I am, and this reflects in the businesses I start. They are based on making contributions to society and creating growth as well as growing as a person.The word Kukura itself directly translated means to make grow. Therefore growth and contribution are core principles that I have embedded into my life.
I strongly employ everybody to really identify what there values are and prioritise in life and leverage off of those to build a business and life that feeds them. Gray Vee often says you need to triple down at what you are good at. Very often people look at what is the more commendable of traits and try to build around that, and overlook their own talents and calling.
