Everyone who knows me well , will without hesitation l label me as frugal. It is for this reason I believe that I should use this article to both defend and justify myself. Firstly I accept that I am frugal , but I am not a cheapskate. I am just not buying anything unless it can deliver a return.
I hate spending my money, actually hate is not a strong enough word, I loath it. I just absolutely hate being parted with my money, I much prefer it when it comes in my direction. When my money leaves me it goes to someone else.If you do not pay attention to money it can easily become a zero sum game, where you are constantly losing. I can fathom paying for the necessities such as food, water , electricity etc.. but outside the realm of necessity I am not really interested. I need some convincing , and the only thing that will convince me is that I will get some return on my money. This return has to be some what quantifiable , self – care and happiness aren’t returns I am interested in, and yes we can argue that this can increase your productivity and consequently improve your money making capacity , but you can do self -care for free, switch of your phone – trust me you will be feeling better in no time.
The other reason why I am so “tight” with money is because I have bigger plans for it . If I went out an wasted in on a designer bag I would not be to impressed with myself. Let’s look at the numbers, a good designer bag starts around R 20 000 , do you know what you can do with R20000? You can do a lot of things, such as gain a shareholding in a start-up company. Being able to call myself a VC is a better flex than owning a designer bag, I am just saying. Of course it is different for everyone, some people really like owning brands, but wait so do I. I own a lot of big name brands, but just in the form of stocks …it is much more rewarding. Also as a side note can I just say how its always bothered me how people freely market brands by wearing the clothing of these brands with the logo of the brand floating across this person, who has become a walking billboard. You are literally a walking billboard for these brands who does free marketing for these companies, while also paying them to do it. What I envy is these retailers who have built such a brilliant business model.
So yes, in what turned out to be a very surprisingly short article I have explained and justified why I am so frugal, and perhaps there some things that I have brought to your attention that make you reconsider your own spending habits. In my own wise words I would like to leave with a quote :
“People always tell me they do not want to work 9-5 jobs, because they do not want to work to make someone else rich. Fair enough but these are the same people who want to buy R 10 000 bags, where do you this money goes, to charity ? When you buy Gucci, you make Gucci rich. When you spend your money it goes to someone else and makes someone else rich, rather save your money and pay yourself”
